The condition of diabetes occurs when the concentration of blood glucose, or blood sugar, becomes too high. While your body generates glucose internally, it is also obtained from the food you ingest. In diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce an adequate amount of insulin or the insulin produced is not effectively utilized. This impairment in insulin function results in the accumulation of glucose in the blood, preventing its efficient transfer to cells for energy.
